Install
Download it, what runs after you do, and how it updates.
Download
Kumo.dmg: open it and drag Kumo to Applications. The app is signed and notarised, so it opens on the first double-click. macOS will not send you to System Settings to allow it.
You need an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 13 or later. There is no Intel build and no Windows build. Kumo is not in the Mac App Store, because the sandbox cannot host the way it keeps agent processes alive.
You also need at least one agent CLI installed and signed in. Kumo does not ship one. See Set up an agent.
First run
The window opens empty. Kumo does not scan your disk for repositories.
- Import a project. Use the button in the middle, or the folder icon next to PROJECTS.
- Select a Workspace in the tree. An agent has to run somewhere, and that somewhere is a Workspace, not a project. For a git repository the main checkout is the first one.
- Press
+in the tab bar (or⌘N), click an agent, and type.
That is the whole loop. Everything else in these docs is about doing it with more agents at once.
What is running after you install
Two processes:
- The runtime does the work. It keeps the register of projects, Workspaces and agents, queues your prompts, runs git, and keeps a connection to every agent. While it is alive, there is a Kumo icon in the menu bar.
- The workbench window is only a client. It talks to the runtime over a local Unix socket. No port is ever opened.
That split is why closing the window is safe. ⌘Q, the red dot and Quit in the Dock all close
the window. Agents keep running and the menu bar icon stays. Click the menu bar icon, or open
Kumo from the Dock, to bring the window back.
To stop everything (agents, terminals, runtime, window), right-click the menu bar icon and choose Quit Kumo. It asks first, because that stops agents that are mid-turn.
Each agent’s process is held by its own small holder process, so it survives even a runtime restart. Nothing you have running is lost when the app updates itself.
Updates
Kumo checks for a new version when the window opens, and every four hours after that. When one is
out, a green download button appears in the right rail, above Settings. Click it and you get
Kumo 0.26.0 is available, then a progress bar, then Restart. You can also check by hand in
Settings → About → Check for updates.
Nothing moves until you press Restart. The new app is already in place by then; Restart only relaunches the window. Agents that were running keep running through it, and the new window quietly swaps the old runtime for its own.
Where Kumo keeps things
| Data | ~/Library/Application Support/kumo/ |
| Logs | ~/Library/Logs/kumo-runtime.log, ~/Library/Logs/kumo-gui.log |
| Worktrees | ~/worktrees/<repo>/<branch> by default. Change it in Settings → General |
| Managed projects | ~/KumoProjects/ (folders Kumo creates for you, see Projects & Workspaces) |
Conversations are not stored here. Kumo keeps no second copy of what you and an agent said. History is replayed by the CLI you were talking to, from its own session files.
Uninstall
Quit Kumo from the menu bar, then drag the app to the Trash. To remove the register too, delete
~/Library/Application Support/kumo/ and the two log files. Your repositories and worktrees are
untouched.
During the beta
Everything is unlocked and there is no account to create until 1 November 2026. What changes after that is on Settings, keys & plans.
